Google Search Console is an amazing tool that gives you invaluable information about the health of your site, allowing you to index your website and monitor how it performs and returns in search results.

Here's how Google describe their Search Console:

"Webmaster Tools is a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor and maintain your site's presence in Google Search results. You don't have to sign up for Webmaster Tools for your site to be included in Google's search results, but doing so can help you understand how Google views your site and optimize its performance in search results."

We are sure you've heard all about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), it's something that has been floating around more and more often on the internet, especially if you have a website or blog. Many think that SEO is a one time job whereby once you achieve your desired ranking, it will stay that way forever - unfortunately not. SEO is something that must be maintained and nurtured, it should be part of your business strategy and given fair priority in your digital marketing efforts. Using Google Search Console is part of this, ensuring that your website is healthy and set up correctly will set a solid foundation for your SEO.

Here's how to add your Squarespace site to Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools).

Creating an account

Great news, if you already have a Google account, you will already have a Google Search Console account. If not, simply create a google account and you can get started. Click here to visit the Search Console - it's worth adding it to your bookmarks for quick access in the future.

Adding your website

Once you click the link above to access Google Search Console, you will see a page like this. You will need to put your website URL in the box where it says https://www.example.com/ and then click add property.

Verify Ownership

Once you have added your property, you will need to verify that you are the owner of this website. There are a number of ways to do this, however, I find the easiest is to use the HTML tag. To do so, click Alternate methods and then choose HTML tag. Highlight the code which begins with <meta name= and copy it.

Head over to the backend of your Squarespace website and navigate to Settings > Advanced > Code Injection and paste your copied Meta Tag into the Header. Now return to the search console and click the red verify button.

Now that you've added your sitemap, you should Fetch as Google which allows you to simulate a Google Crawl which is basically Google finding your pages and indexing them. Simply click Crawl > Fetch as Google and click the red Fetch button. Once you a have done this, a new row will be added to the table below where you can click Request Indexing - a box will pop up where you should click Crawl this URL and its direct links.

Adding WWW And Non WWW Domains

Google sees www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com as two separate websites which can have an impact on your SEO. Choosing a preferred domain will allow you to prevent duplicate content, focus your SEO Link juice and optimise your index status.

To choose a preferred domain, simply click the little cog in the top right hand corner and click site settings. You will then see the option to choose www. or non www. - the choice is yours. We also recommend you add www and non www versions of your website in Search Console like you did in step one.
